Working out of her private studio since 2008, Bérangère Maximin has developed her own approach to sound art and electronic music, composing dense, immersive pieces with immediate impact. On four albums which have aroused international interest, she has revealed a taste for mixing disparate sounds together with a sense of detail, effusive, lyrical playings with the digital material and tight nuanced writing. Still, she remains a highly intuitive nature. Bérangère Maximin’s music engages the listener in consideration of space and textures. The sound ambivalence and its independence from its original source being at the centre of her work.
She’s toured in solo on the electronic music scene and in contemporary art museums across Europe and North America such as Swiss Dampfzentrale and London Hayward Gallery and shared the bills with singular personalities such as Tim Hecker, CoH, Keith Fullerton Whitman,Bernard Parmegiani, Christian Zanesi and Fennesz. She’s also performed in more jazz oriented festivals such as Quebec Victoriaville’s FIMAV. More occasionally, she performs with uncompromising musicians such as Fred Frith in improvisation. They’ve played in duo since 2011 in the US and France. This musical crossover is meant to continue.
Since 2010, the composer has also obtained commissions and residencies at Paris’ Ina-GRM (2010, 2011, 2012), Stockholm’s EMS (2014), France’s La Muse En Circuit (2014), Grim-Montévidéo (2010), IMEB Institute (France) and was artist in residence at ‘Villa Medicis Hors Les Murs’ in New York City (Cultures France, 2011).
